Justice Gary Clingman was appointed by Governor Susana Martinez to the New Mexico Supreme Court in April 2018. He previously served for 21 years as a New Mexico District Court Judge in Lovington. Justice Clingman holds a BS from the University of West Texas, Permian Basin attended Texas Tech School of Law receiving his JD in 1984. While attending Texas Tech he was a member of the Law Review and served as its Comments Editor. Following graduation, Justice Clingman spent the next 12 years working as an associate attorney and then partner of the Maddox Law Firm in Hobbs. He also spent time giving back to his community. He served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club and Teen Court of Lea County and also became a member of the Hobbs Municipal School Board and the New Mexico Activities Association. He officiated high school football for 15 years.
Justice Clingman was elected to the Fifth Judicial District in 1997 and served until 2018. During his tenure, Clingman presided over 600 criminal and civil jury trials ranging from simple felonies to death penalty cases and from complex lender liability cases to multi-party oil and gas litigation. Justice Clingman was also active in Children’s Court serving as the Lea County Juvenile Delinquency Judge for 21 years and the Child Abuse and Neglect Judge for 7 years. Justice Clingman was happily married to Alice Michelle Holder for 44 years until her passing in August 2017. He has two grown sons, Phillip and Patrick and has two grandchildren.
